What kind of jobs will I get involved in as a public relations executive?
The job of a public relations account executive can vary from day to day, depending on the area of expertise. PR agencies often specialize in specific industrial sectors, such as engineering, IT, medical and financial.
The pace of work and the depth of detail required may vary depending on the type of targeted support and deadlines.
Tasks typically involve some of the following:
- ensuring the connection on a daily basis with clients and the media, often by phone and e-mail;
- monitoring of the media, including newspapers, magazines, newspapers, broadcasts, news agencies and blogs;
- working as part of an account team to develop customer proposals and implement PR activity;
- researching activities for new business proposals and to present to potential new customers;
- preparation and participation in client meetings;
- research, writing and distributing press releases to the media;
- collection, analysis and evaluation of media coverage;
- handling events, including press conferences and promotional events;
- market research;
- location photography.
Are there specific entry requirements?
A good degree in any discipline is acceptable for entry into this profession, although academic training in public relations, English literature, journalism, marketing or similar products can give you an advantage over other candidates.
You could also do a post-graduate diploma in public relations to really increase your chances of finding a job.
The PR industry is incredibly competitive, so to obtain a degree is practically indispensable. A background of work experience, internship or industrial training is generally required by most employers as well.

What sort of money can I earn as a public relations account executive?
Annual salaries for account executives tend to be about £ 18,000 to £ 22,000, then middle-level executives can earn between £ 20,000 and £ 30,000 per annum.
Senior PR professionals can earn salaries upwards of £50,000, with some people even earning up to £110,000 a year.
PR account executives engaged in B2B or financial PR tend to receive higher salaries than their peers who work in fashion, retail or sports PR. Executives with years of experience and a solid reputation can choose to work as a freelancer and develop their own customer base.
In theory, if you choose to go freelance, the earning potential is unlimited.
What would my hours be?
PR account executives work on a basic standard nine to five week. However, in practice, you are often required to put in some serious hard graft and work overtime in order to meet the needs of individual public relations campaigns. This means that most likely you will be required to go beyond expectations especially when main deadlines are approaching.
Senior PR account executive also spend a great deal of time socializing with new and existing customers, business partners and industry professionals. Unfortunately, these activities are typically conducted outside of normal business hours.
And what career progression is there?
From a public relations account executive role, you can work towards being a manager or director within the organisation you currently work for.
There are always options for moving to work in different industries in a more senior role. You could look to work internally for a large company who have their own PR department if you wanted to be focused on one clients needs rather than dealing with multiple clients like when working for an agency. Finally, you could consider setting up on your own and working for your own clients and building your own team in the long run.
Do I get training as a public relations account executive?
The structure and scope of the training you receive will be specific to your PR agency and the industry you work in, ranging from gaining field experience to work shadowing.
Your employer can also arrange for you to attend vocational courses offered by professional bodies, such as the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (ICPR), to help you improve your skills and allow you to gain a professional qualification. It is worth looking into these as the more you have under your belt, the more employable you would be to employers.
