Aerospace engineer (Aeronautical) uses its scientific and technological knowledge for research, design, improve and evaluate situations that improve the performance of aeronautical projects that can include both civil and military aircraft, missiles, weapons systems, satellites and spacecraft.

An aerospace engineer focuses on fuel economy, flight safety, and reducing costs when you use advanced technologies to meet the needs of our customers. Increasingly, the role addresses the environmental impact of air transport.

 

What does an aerospace engineer's role involve?


These are just some of the things an aerospace engineer will be doing.....
  • apply the values of science and technology for aircraft development, the mechanisms and support equipment;
  • undertake engineering methods involving both the creation and manipulation of components;
  • oversee the assembly of aircraft structures and also the installation of engines, tools and additional equipment;
  • participation in flight test programs to measure take-off distance, rate of climb, stall speed, manoeuvrability and landing capacity;
  • responsible for maintenance of aircraft for operation complete together with the creation of regular check-ups, maintenance and services for a variety of technologies;
  • measure and refine the performance of aircraft, systems and mechanisms;
  • modification of projects to increase security options or minimize fuel consumption or waste;
  • the development of repair procedures in addition, how to understand and manage the times for repair and maintenance;
  • gathering information, decrypting the information and issuing the results of specific projects in the form of a technical report;
  • using CAD software packages to do the designs and strategies;
  • work with managers, suppliers and customers to arrange the funds and schedules;
  • project management, resource planning and budget management.

What entry requirements are there?

Most commonly a degree in aerospace or aeronautical engineering is the route to this job but some employers would accept a degree in for example, physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, maths, manufacturing engineering, computer science, production engineering or a space related course.

Average salary for trainee aircraft engineers is between £ 20,000 and £ 30,000, although professionals with additional skills can earn between £ 25,000 and £ 42,000.


What would my hours be?


As the nature of the work can be very complex, occasionally you will need to work longer than expected. The standard working day lasts between 10 and 12 hours.


What sort of career progression is there?


The next step would be to a senior engineering position. It is possible to specialise in particular areas like for example, quality assurance or manufacturing. If you have not already worked towards being a chartered engineer, then doing so would help with pushing a career forward.


What training would I expect to do?


Small companies would normally provide on the job training. Graduates who get onto a graduate training programme with an aerospace company will be provided with a structured training programme. Some companies offer employees to work to get chartered or incorporated status. There are usually short courses that employees will be put onto either in-house or externally.
