Certified accountants or previously known as a British qualified accountant, undertake a wide range of managerial and accounting services in both public and private sector organisations.

 

What do certified accountants do?


The main goal of a certified accountant is to increase efficiency and maximise the profitability of their company. Their valuable skills are in demand within a variety of sectors; a lot of graduate accountants work in public practice firms, however accountants are readily employed across the private, commercial, and not-for-profit sectors. The role of certified accountants involves:

  • undertaking financial administration;
  • administering payrolls;
  • analysing and investigating annual and monthly financial accounts;
  • presenting reports, budgets, and financial statements;
  • financial estimations and risk analysis;
  • meeting with managerial staff, colleagues and clients;
  • negotiating business terms with clients and associated organisations;
  • Growing and taking care of financial systems/policies;
  • Managing income and expenditure;
  • Keeping up to date and complying with up to date taxation legislation.

What are the entry requirements?


Most recruiters that are looking to fill certified accountant positions want a candidate with a bachelor’s degree and the CPA designation. Many employers show preference to candidates with an MBA in accounting.

Once qualified candidates who have gained an MBA in accounting are able to:
  • Develop concrete solutions to real-world accounting problems.
  • Make financial reports and budgeting models for a variety of businesses across industries, including both non-profit and profit companies.

What would I earn as a certified accountant?


Salaries for qualified senior level certified accountants does vary but typically are between £40,000 and £100,000+ .


What would my hours be?


Like many other office based roles, you would be expected to work 40 hours week but in such management roles, you may need or choose to work over time. Part time, flexi-time and job sharing are all quite common.


Is there career progression?


Many newly qualified certified accountants will stay with their current employer for some time after completing their training agreement. Once qualified certified accountants may receive an increased pay salary or have taken on higher levels of responsibility. As ACAs are in demand, members often have varied careers working in a number of industries, sectors and locations.
