Spain - Visas and Permits

According to your citizenship, the duration and purpose of your stay in Spain, a visa may or may not be required before departure.

What are Visas and Work Permits?
Firstly, here is an explanation of what a visa, a work permit and immigration actually is.
- A visa is an official authorization appended to a passport, permitting entry into and travel within a particular country or region.
- A work permit is a generic term for a legal authorization, which allows a person to take employment. It is most often used in reference to instances where a person is given permission to work in a country where one does not hold citizenship,
- Immigration is the act of immigrating; the passing or coming into a country for the purpose of permanent residence.
It will depend on how long you want to go for, why you want to go and certain other factors as to which of the visas you must apply for.

Visa Exemptions
Visas are required by everyone visiting Spain for a period no longer than three months except:
1. nationals of EU countries, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland regardless of purpose and/or length of stay;
2. other nationals including British, Australian, Canadian, USA, Other EU, Japanese for up to 90 days;
3. nationals of Andorra, Anguilla, Argentina, Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Brunei, Bulgaria, Cayman Islands, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, El Salvador, Falkland Islands, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong (SAR), Israel, Korea (Rep), Liechtenstein, Macau (SAR), Malaysia, Mexico, Monaco, Montserrat, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Romania, St Helena, San Marino, Singapore, Turks & Caicos Islands, Uruguay, Vatican City and Venezuela for stays of up to 90 days;
4. holders of travel documents issued by the Geneva convention of July 1951, by Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK for stays of up to 90 days;
5. nationals of any of the Schengen member states who hold permanent residency are entitled to re-enter the Schengen area without a visa, provided proof of residence and a valid passport are submitted;
6. transit passengers continuing their journey by the same or first connecting aircraft

Types of Visas and Costs
A uniform type of visa, the Schengen visa, is issued for tourist, business and private visits. Cost is £24.15.

Validity
Short-stay (single- and multiple-entry): valid for six months from date of issue for a stay of maximum 90 days per entry. Transit (single- and multiple-entry): valid for a maximum of five days per entry, including the day of arrival. Visas cannot be extended and a new application must be made each time.
