What Employers Are Looking For



When applying for a new role, it is important to think about what the employer may actually be looking for. Employers are looking for evidence that you have the skills and qualities needed to perform well in the role.

Primarily, an employer will want to see that you have the specific qualifications, experience or specialist skills that are necessary to perform in the particular role.


In addition to qualifications and technical skills, employers also want to see "employability skills", which are almost universal across all employers. For example, they will want to see teamwork, problem solving, communication (listening, verbal, written), analytical, computer, initiative, planning/organising and self-management skills and the ability to learn. These are all important to showing you will be a well-rounded, competent, future employee.


There will also be certain "attributes" that the employer will be looking out for. These are your values, personality traits or personal characteristics. For example, important attributes may be honesty and integrity, commitment, loyalty, enthusiasm, reliability, commonsense, good self-esteem, sense of humour, motivation, willingness to learn and flexibility/adaptability.


More and more often, employers expect you to know what their needs are and how you can fill them. It is critical to success these days, that you are aware what they are looking for in a potential recruit. It is not 100% focus on YOU as it used to be in the recruitment process but what YOU can bring to the company and how you can assist them to move forward. What is good news is that once you know what the employers are looking for, you can tailor your background aligns with the common employer requirements.


Obviously, some employers will want to see certain skills and attributes more than others and what they require will also vary depending on the particular role they are recruiting for. The above lists are not exhaustive. As long as you can touch on the majority of the above points and illustrate some practical examples for each, you will impress the reader. Try to make sure that you demonstrate these important factors in the whole recruitment process, including your CV, cover letter and application forms as well as in any interviews you go to.
